Letter 23: The Cost of Obedience — Saying Yes When It Hurts

Saying Yes When It Hurts

When Jesus called His disciples, He said:

“Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)

Obedience costs something.
It costs comfort, approval, and sometimes even the relationships we thought we couldn’t live without. It costs our pride, our plans, and our desire to control every outcome.

Obedience is saying yes to God when it would be easier to say no.
It’s trusting Him when everything in us screams to run away.
It’s surrendering our will—even when it doesn’t make sense.

There were moments in my own journey when obedience meant leaving behind dreams, letting go, and walking away from places that felt like home. It meant carrying a cross that felt too heavy. It meant tears, confusion, and days when I wondered if it was all worth it.

Sometimes I thought I misunderstood God.
Sometimes I wondered if I’d made a mistake.
But every time I chose obedience, even in the dark, He met me with grace I never knew I needed.

Obedience isn’t easy. But it’s always worth it. Because every time I laid down my plans, I found Jesus standing there—stronger than my fear, closer than my pain.

Following Jesus is the narrow road.
The road that costs everything but leads to life.
The road that leads us closer to the One who gave everything for us.

And one day—when we stand before Him—every sacrifice, every tear, every yes will be worth it. Because it will all be for the One who gave everything for us.

“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help me to choose obedience even when it’s hard. Give me strength to carry my cross and follow You—no matter the cost. Amen.
