How to Discern Truth in the Last Days
We’ve talked about the "mask" and the ancient gaslighting that started in Eden. But once you realize you’re being lied to, the next question is: How do I know what is actually real?
The Bible doesn’t leave us guessing. In 1 John 4:1, we are given a direct command:
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."
In the "Last Days," discernment isn't a luxury; it’s a survival skill. Here is how you test the spirits and keep your peace in a world of noise.
1. The "Christ" Standard
The first and most important test is the Person of Jesus. Any spirit, teacher, or "inner voice" that tries to downplay Jesus, make Him optional, or strip Him of His divinity is not from God.
The Question: Does this lead me closer to the Jesus of the Bible, or a "version" of Him that makes the world more comfortable?
The Scripture:"Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God" (1 John 4:2).
2. The "Peace vs. Confusion" Marker
Gaslighting creates a fog. It makes you feel "crazy," frantic, and unstable. The Holy Spirit, however, works differently. Even when He convicts us of sin, He brings clarity and a path to restoration.
The Question: Does this message leave me feeling "scrambled" and anxious, or does it bring a sober peace, even if the truth is hard to hear?
The Scripture:"For God is not the author of confusion but of peace" (1 Corinthians 14:33).
3. The "Fruit" Inspection
You can wear a mask of "holiness" for a long time, but you cannot fake spiritual fruit forever. Eventually, what is on the inside will leak out.
The Question: What is the "aftertaste" of this person’s influence or this thought’s presence? Is there humility and love, or is there a thirst for control and a spirit of pride?
The Scripture:"You will recognize them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16).
4. The "Scripture" Filter
This is the ultimate safety net. If a spirit tells you something that contradicts the written Word of God, the test is over. You don't need to pray about it or "see how it feels." If it goes against the Bible, it is a lie.
The Question: Where is this in the Word?
The Scripture:"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105).
Why Testing "Everything" is Your Secret Weapon
When you start testing the spirits, you stop being a victim of your circumstances. You realize that you don't have to "swallow" every thought that enters your head or every headline that crosses your screen.
Our hope is not in the reliability of others. We know people will wear masks. We know the enemy will try to trick us just like he tricked Eve. But when our hope is in Jesus, we are anchored to the Truth.
A Prayer for Discernment
Lord, give me eyes to see behind the masks—including my own. Help me to test every voice against Your Word. If it isn’t from You, I don't want it. If it is from You, give me the courage to follow it. Keep my hope anchored in Jesus alone. Amen.
A Final Thought for the Weary Heart
If you’ve been tricked, don't beat yourself up. Eve was in a perfect garden and was still deceived. The goal isn't to become cynical or cold-hearted; it’s to become "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16).
By testing the spirits, you are protecting the heart God gave you. You are choosing to place your ultimate hope in Jesus, the only one who will never hide His face, never change His story, and never lead you into the fog.
He is the Truth that sets you free—even from the masks of others.
